Shard

Marika-Zammartino
1. What makes this place so special to you?
The Shard is such an iconic building with its expressive facades of glass rising out of the surrounding buildings. I love how glass captures the light and is constantly changing its appearance and feel depending on the weather. The building shines against a blue sky and seems to merge into the clouds on an overcast day.
Designed by Renzo Piano allegedly on the back of a napkin as a ‘shard of glass through historic London’ the building looks unfinished but somehow perfect, so easily encompassing both office, residential and entertainment space. You can have coffee on the 35th floor or breath in the air at 306m on the open-air viewing deck.
The Shard evokes emotion from all angles throughout the day. Located at London Bridge the river Thames quietly wraps itself around the base which doesn’t arrogantly touch the ground.
The top of The Shard is like a 16th century pinnacle or mast of a very tall ship. The tower is designed to be a sharp and light presence in the London skyline that shares the same atmosphere as stately buildings like St Pauls and breath the same air.
2. When did you first visit or decide this is a special place?
I was so impressed on my first visit in October 2013 and since Woodalls have had the privilege of fitting out 17,000 sq offices for Parliamentary affairs company Dods in 2016. Experiencing The Shard from an operational angle was eye opening.
3. How would you describe this place to a close friend?
Ever changing yet constantly inspiring. An iconic London building that shouldn’t, but somehow strangely fits perfectly into the landscape.
